Project and direction of the reform of the Waste Treatment Plant in Mataro (Barcelona). The plant was first comissioned in 1994 and initially before the reform, had only the incinerator for 160,000 t / year of waste. In the refurbishment it was incorporated a sorting plant which separates the waste into different streams: an organic fraction that is intended part of it to a process of aerobic stabilization and another part to an anaerobic digestion with biogas generation. This biogas is used in two combustion engines of 850 kWe each. Other flows out of the plant are paper and cardboard, glass and various plastics which are sent to a specialist treater. Finally, the reject fraction is devoted to energy recovery plant which also was adapted to be able to treat waste with a calorific value higher than the original. The energy recovery plant was extended by modifying the boiler and combustion system by 20% and adding a new steam turbine that generates 2 MW on top of the original 11MW.
